Man down.

For those of you that do not know this yet:

Alex Marin was hit by a truck on the Northway yesterday, as he was working for DOT. Although his injuries are not life threatening, his injuries to his leg are serious enough (steel rod inserted to reconstruct his lower leg) that he is still in the hospital,
and will be for a couple of days (Albany Med). His rehab will be a difficult and painful one.

If you want to give him a call and wish him well and show him your support, his cell number is (518) 588-9561. When you hit your knees tonight, throw a prayer up for a speedy recovery for our buddy.

He just got back to playing last year, after a few years off, and was as excited as a kid on Christmas Eve about the upcoming season.
Unfortunate accident, that is likely to take away his entire season. Give him a ring and try to cheer him up!

Mike thanks for posting this news, unhappy as it is.

Alex and I were teammates on my first 38 club here, Adirondack Beverage. He was fine shortstop, a scrappy hitter,
and he loved to compete. Generally, he hit singles and doubles, which he'd stretch by at least one extra
base with a steal. He was very fast. But he wasn't only a singles and doubles hitter: one day I remember
he clocked one - at the Knick, I think - and the ball sailed well over the fence. He smiled broadly at that.

I'm hoping his surgery will let him, in short time, rebound and get some of his speed back. I know what it's like to have
major surgery just before the start of the season. My rehab allowed me to come back for the last three games. I'm
hoping Alex has similar, in fact, better fortune.

Alex's eagerness to play, so typical of him, can be a good thing: It can spur him on to heal fast. I'm pulling for him.

-Mike

I talked to Alex this morning - he was in fairly good spirits and doing better than yesterday. Apparently he didn't even see the truck coming and just woke up in the hospital. He was the one listed in critical condition so it's great that he is improving and he said the prognosis is he should be able to walk again.

Alex just sent me a picture of his leg that was taken when they changed the bandages this morning.
OMG!! Gruesome. It will be a while, but he will bounce back. I believe that Mike Hart was correct.
His motivation to come back to the game we all love again will help with his recovery. It will give him
a good reason to go through all of the painful rehab.

There is something else that is helping him through all of this:
It is the outpouring of love and support from you guys.
He just called me to ask me to thank all of the people who reached out to him after learning of the accident.
It is very heart warming to be a part of this family of baseball lovers. We are much more than teammates and/or competitors.
When things like this happen, this group of young at heart men never disappoints. Always reaching out to show support and friendship.
Alex is very appreciative of all of the love that has been showed to him with texts and calls wishing him well and offering prayers, and wants me to thank all of you for him.

You guys are the best! God bless you all!
