55 Giants-Twins Get One In

At A Diamond the Twins finally got their first game of the season out of the way after the previous 2 were washed out. Twins drew first blood in the top of the 1st when Rick Saidenberg hit a triple and scored on a Tom King single. It stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the 5th when the Giants tied it at 1 all as Vanetten reached on an error, moved to second on a fielders choice , went to third on a Macquire single, and was brought home on a ground out by Nardacci . The Giants went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the 6th when Ferguson hit a 2 out single, went to second on a passed ball, and scored on a Mike Aiello single. Up came the Twins in the top of the 7th . Terry McCarthy led off with an opposite field single, Joe Parker popped out, Ruslander and Decker reached on infield errors, Dom Arcidiacono singled, and Koutsakis singled resulting in 3 runs putting the Twins back out in front 4-2. Wayne Nicholsen retired the 9-1-2 Giant batters in the bottom of the 7th to earn a complete game victory. Nicholsen, pitching for the first time since last October allowed 2 runs, 0 earned, 7 hits, no walks, and recorded 2 strikeouts. Jerry Solomon pitched very well for the Giants going 6 1/3, giving up 7 hits, 4 runs, 1 earned , 2 walks, while striking out 5. Reisenger led off the second for the Giants with a booming triple to right but was stranded there as Nicholsen bore down and retired the next 3 batters on a pop up, ground out, and strikeout. Smaka and Reisinger each had 2 hits for the Giants while multi-hit players for the Twins were Arcidiacono and McCarthy. Both teams were solid defensively with the Twins committing 1 error while the Giants had 2. The defensive play of the game occurred in the bottom of the 6th when Giants cleanup hitter Phillips led off the inning with a homicidal line drive that pitcher Nicholsen snared at head level in an amazing effort to preserve his life. Twins take the first one 4-2.
