The Damn Yankees scored what proved to be the winning run on a pitch that bounced off the umpire and rolled out of play through a gap in the very close backstop at Watervliet last night. Tim Brown reached first on a one out walk in the bottom of the fifth, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out by Griffen and scored after the ball glanced off the ump and was irretrievable after exiting the playing field under the backstop. That made the score 2-1 Yankees, which is how it stayed. Winning pitcher John Weber pitched a 6 hitter striking out 4. Wayne Nicholsen took a tough loss also giving up 6 hits. So far this week, Nicholsen has absorbed a tight complete game 2-1 loss to the 62 Yankees on Monday night, lost a 2-1 complete game heartbreaker to the 55 Damn Yankees on Wednesday night, and will start again on Friday against the 62 Yankees. Why so much reliance on 69 1/2 year old Wayne Nicholsen some might ask ? To paraphrase that great American comedian Flip Wilson-Helen may be Ready, but Waynes available.
