Having not played a game in 38 days, the WhizKids finally found dry land at the B diamond Thursday night and squared off against the Dodgers.
The Whiz opened the scoring in the first on a single by Dave Sirani, a stolen base, and a sac fly from Shawn Martin. The Dodgers evened things up in the bottom of the second when a John Cortese single plated Mark Denicola. The Whiz made it 3-1 in the fourth as Bob Bolt and Martin both worked one out walks. Bolt scored on a single off the bat of Gene Hallenbeck, and a Mike Kane sac fly brought home Martin. It stayed that way until the seventh, when the WhizKids broke the game open as they batted around. Jeff Friedman had a run scoring single, while brother Jan had a double that scored two. Paul Graziano (single), Bob Holmes (sac fly) and Joe Burns (single) also collected ribbies. Jim Bradley had 2 hits for the Dodgers.
Mike Kane (4-1) went the distance, scattering 7 hits, striking out 6, and not issuing a walk. He got stronger as the game went on, retiring the last 12 batters he faced.
Don Ball and the rest of the Dodgers have a solid team, and will be a tough matchup for anyone in the playoffs.
