The 1920s had ''The Babe,'' the 2020s has ''The Sho.'' But when it comes to mastery on both the mound and at the plate in the CDMSBL, it would be hard to top the dominant performance on display last night at New Scotland Park where ''Pete the Greek'' single-handedly lifted the 62s Yankees past the Americans.
Geannelis threw six strong innings, allowing just one run, and went 4-for-4 with a towering fence-clearing grand slam to keep the Yankees atop the 62s standings at 7-3. He was supported by the solid infield play of his ex-Giants Ron Smaka, Tony Nardacci, Will Fergeson and Jim Konstantakis, who hurled the seventh to close out the game. Smaka and Fergeson each snagged line drives for double plays to snuff a pair of Americans rallies.
Pete G sparked a 5-run first inning with an RBI hit, followed it up with a couple of doubles, and broke open the game with his slam in the 6th.
Lefty Dave Hartman, who arrived late to the park and took over on the mound in the second inning with the 5-run deficit, held the Yankees in check for his first four innings until serving up the Geannelis slam. But the ''Boomer'' had a little ''Sho-Time'' in him as well with a towering double to the fence in right field that drove in the Americans run. Ironman Mike LaBarge, who has caught more innings than Carleton Fisk, chipped in with a couple of hits for the Americans.
Peter Geannelis. Ever notice him preparing before a game hitting off a tee into the screen he carries around in the back of his vehicle ? Hes also well known as one of the very top catchers in CDMSBL. Try running on him. Now hes developing into a top tier pitcher. Quickly. With a smile on his face and a good word for anyone who crosses his path. Work ethic. Good attitude. Student of the game. Who wouldnt want him as a teammate ? We can all learn something from this guy.
