Wednesday 8/11 (Watervliet, NY) 55-Pirates 10 55-Americans 4 Behind another strong outing by Wayne Newcomb (2-2), the Pirates bested the Americans, to capture 3 of their last 4 games, playing some improved and solid baseball. The visiting Buccos jumped out to a 2-0 advantage against Dan Durback, as Jim Jasiewicz, and Newcomb opened the game with singles, and wheels of 2 stolen sacks, followed by a Jim Ansel ribby ground out. In the bottom half, John Corrigan got the Americans into scoring position with a single, and SB, but a good running catch by Ray Meandro off the bat of Durback, and Newcomb opened with a goose-egg to extend his scoreless streak to 8 innings. Pirates struck again in the 2nd with 3 knocks, Mike Hart, Bob Noto and Jazzy, 3 errors, and 3 swiped bags to increase the tally to 5-0. Newcomb got jammed up in the second, as a Joe Parker hard single, and a Chuck Rebuhn long 2-bagger, were followed by ribbys from Ted Witting and a Dave Plew single, before Newcomb fanned the final batter, the 2nd of 4 on the evening. Plew came on for the Amerks, and quieted the Bucco bats, until they went back to work in the 4th. A combo of an E-3, a Newk single, an Ansel hustle double, and Jim Kidd single (3-4), and Meandro rbi knock restored the lead to 9-2. Newcomb got knicked for the final Americans' run in the 5th, on Gibby Travis base-hit, a fielder's choice, and Parker single loaded the bases with 1-out. Newcomb issued his only free pass, to Brad Buchan to bring in a run, and leave the sacks drunk. Newcomb induced a Tinkers-Evers-Chance DP ball turned by Rick Knipper - Ansel - Noto, 6-4-3 to escape further damage, and then hung zero in the Americans final frame.
