WhizKids take two (well, technically three).

Due to several rainouts, the WhizKids were faced with playing 6 games in 9 days (factor in games that some players have in the 33s, 45s and 62s and its closer to 8 games in 10 days!).

Of course, it had to start with a week of high heat and humidity.

Game 1: Joe Burns (3-0) pitched 5 innings of 3-hit ball as the WhizKids defeated the Americans on 8/25. He helped his own cause by going 2-2 with a double, walk, 2 runs and 2 RBI. Jeff Friedman (3-3, double, 2 RBI) and Shawn Martin (4-4, double, 3 runs, 2 stolen bases and an RBI) also had perfect days at the plate.

Game 2: Bob Bolt (4-0) pitched a complete game, giving up 7 hits and 2 runs as the WhizKids defeated the Twins on 8/26. Joe Burns turned in another multi-hit game, and added a stolen base, scored a run, and had a 2-run single in the decisive 5 inning, as the WhizKids batted around to break open a close game. Jan Friedman, who caught all 12 innings in those consecutive games, was 2-3 with 2 stolen bases and scored a run. Bob Homer Holmes was was a big part of the team success. He drew a one out walk in the third, stole second, and scored on a 2-out double by Bolt to tie the score at 1. Then in the fifth, he hits a 2-out single to drive in Jan Friedman to tie the score at 2. After stealing second, Holmes scored the go ahead run on a single by Greg Mangione. The WhizKids added 5 more runs that inning, and Bolt finished strong, getting 3 of the last 6 outs on strikeouts.

Game 3: Well, not actually a game, and certainly not the way either team wanted it, but the WhizKids won by forfeit on a game that was to have been played 8/27 against the Angels.

So, that leaves another 3-game week for the WhizKids. They are scheduled to take on the Pirates on 8/30. After that game, they face the Yankees on 9/1, and the Cubs on 9/2. Quite the challenge, but the WhizKids are looking forward to it!
