WhizKids punch their ticket to the Finals!

After being rained out on Wednesday, the WhizKids and Yankees squared off in Game 2 of their semifinal series at the A diamond last night. A classic pitchers duel between Bob Bolt of the WhizKids against Darrell Duncan of the Yankees.

In the bottom of the second, Tim Brown reached on an error. Courtesy runner Duncan advanced to second base on a passed all. Bolt retired the next two batters on a strikeout and a comebacker, but Paul Post singled to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Bolt retired 14 of the next 15 batters. The only Yankee to reach base during that span was Rich Royka, who struck out, but reached first base when the catcher couldnt come up with the loose ball.

In the meantime, Duncan retired 13 of the first 17 batters that he faced. Shawn Martin, reached on an error in the first, but was caught stealing. Mike Kane drew a 1-out walk in the second, stole second, but was left stranded. Paul Graziano got the first WhizKids hit, leading off the third with a single, but had too big of a lead at first, and was picked off. Martin had a 2-out single in the 4th, stole second, but was stranded.

The WhizKids broke through in the sixth. With one out, Pete Geanellis was hit by a pitch. Courtesy runner Graziano stole second. Joe Burns singled him to third, then he stole second. Dave Sirani plated Graziano with a single to tie the game at 1. Bolt hit a drive to right, and only a great catch by Doug Edick prevented an extra base hit. Bolt had to settle for a tie breaking sac fly. Duncan got a comebacker to end the inning.

In the seventh, Gene Hallenbeck led off with a single, and stole second. Duncan got the next three outs without any damage. The Yankees were determined to keep their hopes alive. 1-out singles by Royka and Andy Pedone put the tying and winning runs on base. The next batter grounded to third, and Kane was able to tag out Royka for out number two. Jon Atwell was put in to run for Pedone, representing the tying run. Edick worked the count to 3-2. With the runners going, Edick hit a foul ball towards the first base dugout, and Hallenbeck came racing in to make the catch, and end a thriller of a game!

There were numerous defensive gems and terrific pitching by both teams. Congratulations to the Yankees on a great series!

The WhizKids advance to the Finals and are scheduled to face off against the Cubs on Monday and Wednesday at the A diamond, and if necessary, Friday at New Scotland (if that field ever dries out)!

Tremendous game! Great pitching and web gems on both sides. While we came up short, it was a game I was proud to play in. 55+ year old boys playing at a high level. Kudos to the Whiz who I have the ultimate respect for. Team is loaded with HOF talent and great guys. It's going to be a heck of a championship series.
