The American Baseball Club (5-1) took on the Cubs (6-0) in a battle of the #2 and #3 seeds for the right to play in the Semi-finals.
The Cubs returned to their earlier way of getting off to a fast start, when they scored the games first run in the bottom of the first inning. Jerry Rosen got things started with a one out single. Rosen made it to second when the ABC's first baseman was unable to handle Mike Girard's liner down the 1st baseline. Andy Hoyle singled to score Rosen, and the Cubs were up 1-0. They would double that pleasure with another run in the bottom of the second. Ralph Caputo and Jack Griffin had one out singles. Mike Girard delivered the run with a two-out RBI single.
The ABC would get their first run in the top of the 4th, but the Cubs would not let them enjoy it for long. Jack Griffin led off the bottom of the 4th with a single and a stolen base. Girard followed one out later with the RBI single to make the score 3-1 after 4 innings.
The ABC scored two runs in the top of the 5th to tie the score at 3, and the score remained tied at 3 until the Jack Griffin drove in Ralph Caputo in the bottom of the 7th, to give the Cubs a slim one run lead with two innings to go and Ron Massaroni dealing. The 9th inning came along and The Cubs just needed 3 more outs. However, the American Baseball Club got a one out double, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly to score the tying run, and send the game to extra innings tied at 4. Ron bounced back in the 10th with a 1-2-3 inning.
The Cubs would get a one out double by Andy Hoyle to jump start the Cubs rally in the 10th. Jim Hicks was intentionally walked, and one out later, Darrel Duncan ambushed the first pitch he saw, and sent the winning RBI single to left center field. The Cubs had just won their second extra inning playoff of the day by the identical scores of 5-4. I am incredibly proud of this tough group of old school baseballers. We went through an emotional wringer in the first game (12 innings) in the first game and only had 20 minutes to get it ready to go up against a very good baseball team in a win or go home game. I believe that our close games during the week, while our two opponents were not involved in any one run games all week, was a huge advantage.
Now we have a day off due to weather, and the semifinals and finals will resume on Saturday. Time to heal all of the wounds and get ready to completely empty the tank on Saturday. Lets go Cubbies!
