The Twins and Whiz squared off at the ¨B¨ diamond last night. Pitching for the Twins was Jeff Whitehead with Wayne Nicholsen coming on in relief. Starting for the Whiz was Mike Kane and the Rolaids Relief pitcher Pete Geannelis, who earned a hold for his efforts. Mike Kane had a rough start in the top of the first, giving up lead off double to Charlie Freer. Freer had a nice line drive down the left field line. Kane regrouped though and was able to pick off the runner at second base. Kane retired the next two batters and faced the minimum number of batters after 4 innings. The Whiz were able to tally 4 runs in the bottom of the first on 4 base hits and 2 walks. The Whiz tallied 3 more runs in the bottom of the 2nd, highlighted by doubles from Shawn Martin and Bob Holmes. The Whiz added another run in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The bottom of the 4th saw 5 more runs from the Whiz with 6 hits and 2 walks which included a double by Gene Hallenbeck. Geannelis came on in relief for the top of the 5th and faced the top of the order. Freer lead off the inning with a single, then the 2nd batter, Whitehead was beaned, giving the Twins runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Geannelis was able to induce a fly ball to right for the 1st out, but the Twins now had runners on 1st and 3rd. The next batter popped to 2nd and the final out was tallied with a grounder back to the pitcher. Charlie Freer went 2-2 and recorded the only hits for the Twins. Whiz pitchers combined for 1K and 0 BB. For the Whiz Shawn Martin went 3-3 with a double. John Rigos was 3-3. Paul Graziano was 2-2. Dave Sirani and Jan Friedman were 2-3.
