Game one goes to the Whiz, 7-2.

Two top notch pitchers faced off in game one of the semi-final series between the Cubs and Whiz Kids.
Ron Massaroni took the hill for the Cubs and Bob Bolt got the start for the Whiz.
Both pitchers had tough assignments as they were facing the two best offensive lineups in the league.

Both pitchers did a great job. Bobby Bolt threw 7 complete innings, giving up 2 runs (only 1 was earned), scattering 8 hits,
and walking only one, while striking out 1. The Whiz defense was spectacular behind Bobby, making all of the routine plays
and sprinkling in 5 or 6 web gems. Bob Holmes was fantastic at 3rd, making at least 3 of those web gems, and Paul Graziano
made a diving catch of a Dave Mitchell liner, in the second inning.

Ron Massaroni was equally impressive. He allowed only one earned on six hits and two walks, while striking out 2.
Had Ronnie's defense played like the Whiz, this could have been a 1-1 tie, needing extra innings to decide the winner.
That wasn't the case. The Cubs had two errors in the first that allowed 3 unearned runs. They committed two more in the 4th
that caused 3 of the 4 runs to score in that inning.

This has been an issue for the Cubs all year long, and the spotty defense reared its ugly head at the wrong time. The Whiz are too good of a team to
give extra outs to. When the Cubs didn't handle their business in the first inning, Shawn Martin and Paul Graziano doubled to make them pay.
When the Cubs kicked it around in the 4th, Graziano and John Rigos came up with the big hits to cash in again. Clutch hitting in a big game.
The defending champs cashed in every time the Cubs had a miscue and that is what champions do. They win game one 7-2.

The Cubs offense was led by Mike Reutter and Mike Girard, who had two hits each. Dave Mitchell was hitless but hit 3 screaming line drives in his 3 trips to the plate.
The baseball Gods owe him in game two. Dave was playing for his team on his 20th wedding anniversary. My kind of team player. Thanks, Dave!

Speaking of game two, that will take place Monday, 09/19/22, at the A-Diamond, in Schenectady's Central Park at 5:00 pm.
It should be a great game! Don't miss it!
