55 Americans Take On The Twins

The visiting Americans opened the game loading the bases via 2 walks and a Twins error. However, Twins pitcher Jeff Whitehead hung in and Houdinied his way out of the jam without a run scoring. The bottom of the first saw the Twins score 2 runs on 1 hit, 2 walks, and a hit batter off starter Rich Garbarino. The top of the 4th saw the Americans tie the game at 2 on hits by Sassaone, Finelli, and Caputo. The Twins came right back in the bottom of the frame to go up 3-2 as Jim Tino knocked in Greg Briscoe with a single off reliever Dave Plew. The bottom of the 6th saw the Twins break it open with 5 more runs capped by a long 2 RBI single to right by Joe Parker to put the game seemingly out of reach. The very scrappy Americans sent 6 men to the plate in the top of the 7th , pushed one in to make it 8-3, but the game ended with 2 runners on and Whitehead getting the #2 hitter on a blazing fastball called third strike. Dave Plew did a good job for the Americans over 5 innings of relief. 7 Americans accounted for 7 hits, all singles. The Twins produced 10 hits and were led by Lee Madsen, Rodney Smith, and Jim Tino, each with 2 hits. 2 errors for the Americans and 1 for the Twins.
