Tough One to Lose - Dodgers/Whiz


The Dodgers and Whiz squared off Thursday evening at the Watervliet H.S. field. Starting pitchers were Jim Tesereiro for the Dodgers and Joe Burns for the Whiz. Both pitchers kept the game in check through 3 innings of play. In the top of the 4th the Dodgers got things going. After getting the lead off batter for 1 out, Marc Trinchillo reached on a walk followed by consecutive singles from Dennis Lane and Ray Coletta to load the bases. The next batter ground to the infield with an errant throw that resulted in 2 runs scored and runners at 1st and 3rd with 1 out still. Jim Bradley hit a single scoring the 3rd run of the inning. The Whiz scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th. Doug Reisinger hit a single, then stole 2nd base. Gene Hallenbeck hit a single to score Reisinger. Bob Bolt singled, followed by walks to Mike Kane and Greg Mangione which scored the 2nd run of the inning for the Whiz. Score after 4 innings, 3-2 Dodgers. Top of the 5th saw Greg Gougler reach base on an outfield error, followed by an infield error that allowed Gougler to score. John Weber came in to relieve Tesereiro in the 5th inning. Bottom of the 5th for the Whiz saw singles by Dave Sirani and Shawn Martin, followed by a 2 RBI double from Hallenbeck. Score after the 5th was 4-4. Jeff Friedman came in to pitch for the Whiz for the 6th inning, who was able to keep the Dodgers in check into the 8th inning. Bottom of the 8th and last inning per the umpires saw Don Ball come in to relieve Weber. Hallenbeck, who was the leadoff batter was beaned on the 1st pitch. Hallenbeck attempted to steal 2nd and was thrown out by Tim Burns. Bolt reached base on his 2nd hit of the game, where he proceeded to steal 2nd and 3rd base. The next batter flew out, which brought Mike Kane to the plate with 2 outs. Kane was able to hit a fly ball into the outfield that allowed Bolt to score the winning run. Final score Whiz 5 / Dodgers 4 in 8 innings. For the Dodgers Ray Coletta went 3-3 and Jim Bradley was 2-3. For the Whiz Dave Sirani was 3-4, Gene Hallenbeck 2-2, followed by Shawn Martin and Bob Bolt who were both 2-4. Dodgers pitching had 3 K, 6 BB, 1 HBP, and allowed 12 hits. Whiz pitching had 5 K, 1 BB, and gave up 8 hits.
