The Cubs improved to 4-0 with a lopsided victory over the Richmond Riverdogs.
The Cubs pounded out 15 hits, while plating 14 runs in just 6 innings, as they defeated the team from Richmond 14-0. The Cubs were also able to work 7 walks and one hit batter.
Shawn Martin continued his hot hitting with a 3 for 4 performance, scoring 3 runs and driving in another. Jerry Rosen, Dave Mitchell, and Mike Girard added two hits each. Pete Geanellis, Bob Bolt, Tim Brown, Jim McQuade, and Ron Massaroni all had hits.
Mike Girard started and pitched 3 scoreless innings, giving up 2 singles and one walk, while striking out 1. John Weber came on to pitch the last 4 scoreless innings, giving up just 3 singles and one walk, continually baffling hitters with his curveball. It was fun to watch the Riverdogs mutter to themselves, on the way back to the dugout, after weakly grounding out or popping up. Only 4 batted balls reached the outfield grass in his 4 innings of work.
It was a great game for the Cubs all around, and the 4-0 record with 16 runs against is good enough for a tie for 3rd amongst the 45 teams playing in the round robin. The final game of the round robin will be played at the Twins' Spring Training Stadium, at 10:00 am vs the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles are the other team at 4-0 with only 16 runs against. It should be a great measuring stick, to let us know where we are heading into Friday and Saturday's playoffs.
