Thursday night the Cubs and Yankees got together for a game at the A-Diamond. The game was originally scheduled for 5:30 pm. However, a late booking for a college baseball double header, starting at noon, pushed back the Cubs/Yanks start to 7:00 pm. Meaning the last half of the game would be played under the new lights, just installed this past offseason. To a man the reviews were very positive. The lights are the best we have all player under in this area.
The Cubs got off to a fast start with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st. With two outs and nobody on, the Cubs got singles from Chris Dunn and Ron Lochner. Mike Reutter followed with a booming 2-run double. and the Cubs were owners of a 2-0 lead.
The Yanks did not let the Cubs enjoy that lead for long, as they bunched 4 hits and a hit by pitch to tie the game at 2 in the top of the 2nd. Mal Hinman got the big hit with a 2-out 2 RBI single. The Yanks reloaded the bases after Hinman's big hit, but Cubs starter Mike Girard, got the Yanks number 2 hitter to hit a liner right to Ron Lochner at third to escape further damage. The Yanks looked like they would take the lead in the top of the 3rd, when Jack Griffin led off with a double in the left center field gap and was wild pitched to 3rd. Girard, however got a comebacker and a weak grounder to third for the first 2 outs, and stranded Griffin at 3rd by inducing a routine fly ball to center for the final out.
The Cubs offense seemed buoyed by Girard's Houdini act, when they pounded out 6 hits; worked two walks; and were assisted by 3 Yankees' errors in the bottom of the 3rd, and plated 8 runs. That was basically the ball game. Alex Marin had a 2 RBI single and Miles, Lochner, Reutter, Ron Massaroni, and Jim McQuade added RBI hits in the inning.
The Yanks would get only one more run the rest of the way as Girard finished his second complete game win in as many starts by limiting the Yanks to just 2 more hit the rest of the way. The Cubs would end the game one inning early with 2 runs on 3 hits Dunn, Reutter, and Girard) and 2 walks (Lochner and Jerry Rosen) in the 5th; and walked it off in the bottom of the 6th on a single by Massaroni, walks to McQuade and John Coulombe, followed by Sherwin So's RBI fielder's choice. The final score was 13-3, leaving the Cubs at 2-0 and the Yanks at 1-2.
The offensive heroes for the Cubs were Mike Reutter and Chris Dunn (both 3 for 3). Mike Girard and Ron Massaroni added 2 hits each. Jack Griffin was the only Yankee to record two hits for the Yanks.
Next up for the Cubs is a game vs the Dodgers (the only other undefeated team in the league) next Thursday at the A-Diamond at 5:30 pm. The Yanks will meet the Whiz Kids next Wednesday at the B-Diamond at 5:30 pm.
