Doubleheader day!

Game 1 saw the Cubs facing a stacked team from Orlando.
The Cubs had to balance the need of winning the game versus saving pitching for the playoffs.

Jim Konstantakis took the ball for the Cubs and kept the Orlando Royals baffled for the first 4 innings,
giving up just one unearned run in the 3rd inning. The Cubs took advantage of that pitching by taking an 8-1 lead into the 5th
inning -- scoring 1 in the first; 1 in the second; and 6 in the 4th.

The 5th inning is where this one went south. Just one awful inning against a stacked team is not going to win you any games.
The Royals took advantage of the generosity of the Cubs to plate 9 runs in the inning and take a stunning 10-8 lead. The Cubs committed
two critical errors and walked two, meanwhile the Royals pounded out 5 singles and a double vs 3 Cubs pitchers.
It was like living an actual nightmare.

The Royals got 4 more runs in the 6th, and 1 in the 7th to make the final score 15-8.
The Cubs offense were led by Shawn Martin (2 doubles and a single); Jerry Rosen, Mike Girard, and Dave Mitchell all had two hits each.

The Cubs had to turn around and play game two vs the Lansing Blue Jays (2-0 at the time) at 1:45 pm.
The Blue Jays had just beaten another quality team 15-8, during the early games. A daunting task, but this club has some guts.
The Cubs jumped out to a 8-0 lead after just one inning, and expanded it to 14-0 after just 2 innings.
Meanwhile, Ron Massaroni faced just the minimum 9 batters in the first 3 innings. He gave up one single in the second but immediately
induced a routine 5-4-3 double play. The Cubs got a 15th run in the 4th and another in the 5th. The only run the Blue Jays would manage
came in the 4th on one bloop single an error, and a sacrifice fly. The final score was Cubs 16 - Blue Jays 1.

Mike Girard led the way with 3 hits. Gene Hallenbeck had a double and triple (both were absolute bombs). David Mitchell and Darrell Duncan added 2 hit each.

The Cubs play a morning game on Tuesday against the St. Louis Grays at Terry Park. The Cubs will send Darrell Duncan to the hill looking to go to 4-1.
