New Scotland field was not available due to flooding in Voorheesville so Dennis Lane bent over backwards on short notice and beautifully prepared Watervliet high school field so our game could be played last night. Thank you, Dennis. Thank you. The visiting Arachnids shared the third base dugout with some busy bumblebees who evidently have a nest in there. Theyre not a problem, not aggressive. Anyway, the spiders got on the scoreboard first as leadoff hitter Stefan Koutsakis singled to open the game, stole 2nd, and came around to score on a single by TJ Scorsone 1-zip after half an inning. The Cardinals came right back in the bottom of the inning scoring two runs off Wayne Nicholsen. Ted Vickerson walked, Rick Caruso hit a long triple to right center scoring Vickerson and Caruso came home on a single by Dan MacGuire, 2-1 Cards after 1. Both teams got squat in the 2nd. Top of the third saw the bottom of the Arachnids order produce as Ben Phillips hit a single , stole second, and scored on a single by Koutsakis. Tied 2-2. Nicholsen held the home team in check in the bottom of the third and it remained tied after 3. The Arachnids came alive in the top of the 4th when, after 2 outs , Terry McCarthy, Tom King, and Jim Wing all singled. Don Wixon then hit a drive to the right of the right fielder on the run that went in and out of his glove . 4-2 game. Back come the Cardinals in the bottom of the inning as Jeff Martin opens with a single, Bill Chichester singles and Mark Josefski reaches first on an E-3 plating Martin. 4-3 ball game after 4. Top of the order in the top of the fifth for the spiders sees Koutsakis and Darrell Duncan both double to start the inning. TJ Scorsone reaches on an E-3 followed by a Lee Madsen single. Tom King singles with two out and the arachnids add three more runs giving them some breathing room. 7 to 3 after 4 1/2. Duncan relieves Nicholsen in the fifth and holds the cardinals scoreless the rest of the way. The spiders get one more run in the seventh as Duncan is walked with one out comes around to score on a Scorsone single. Final score 83 arachnids. Nicholsen gets the win. Duncan with the good save. Arachnid pitchers surrender nine hits, issue two bases on balls, strikeout six, and hit one batter. Cardinals pitchers, Chichester and Jeff Martin give up 12 hits, walk one, and strike out three. 3 errors for the Arachnids and 3 errors for the Cardinals. Leading the offense for the Cardinals were Billy Chichester with two hits and Rick Caruso, the booming triple. For the Arachnids, Tom King, and TJ Scorsone each had two hits and Koutsakis went 34 with a double. Duncan also had a long double.
