Fine Pitching Night For 65 Cardinals And Arachnids

New Scotland field was hot and humid. Both starting pitchers, JEFF Martin for the Cardinals and Wayne Nicholson for the Arachnids, kept the game scoreless through five full innings. Nicholsen had a perfect game going through 5 1/3 innings. However, after snagging a line drive in the top of the sixth, Nicholson issued a walk, a single, and another walk and he was done on the mound for the evening. Bases loaded with one out in comes Bob Bolt who had not been on the mound since he had a heart attack pitching in Florida last November. Bolt struck out the first batter he faced looking and got the next hitter on a 64 ground out to end the threat. Still 00 when the spiders came up in the bottom of the inning. Ricky Saidenberg led off with a booming double to right center. Terry McCarthy followed with a single. Next batter strikes out. Tom King reaches on an E-3 and Saidenberg scores the first run of the ball game. Bob Bolt walks and the bases were loaded. Ben Phillips was hit by a pitch hard on the left elbow, which pushed McCarthy home making it a two to nothing ball game. The inning ends as Jim Edelman hits a hard grounder into a 6-4-3 double play. Top of the seventh for the Cardinals. JOSE Gomez opens with a single against Bolt. The next two batters strike out, one looking. Hansen walks putting runners at first and second two outs. However, the game ends on a unassisted ground out to McCarthy at first. The Cardinals wind up with two hits one each by Jeff Martin and Jose Gomez. Arachnids record eight base hits, including a double by Saidenberg two singles by Darrell Duncan and two singles by Terry McCarthy. JEFF Martin pitched a complete game for the Cardinals striking out 4 and walking only one. Fine fine effort. Arachnid starter Wayne Nicholsen surrendered one hit, issued 2 walks. Reliever and winner Bob Bolt gave up one hit, 1 walk, and struck out three. There was only one error in the ballgame. Both teams played excellent defensive baseball. Its a pleasure watching some of these guys work their magic with the leather.
