The Cubs and Whiz Kids got together Monday night, at the A-Diamond, for their final regular season meeting. The game held no meaning in the standings, so both teams batted every player and pitched position players. That being said, both teams are made up of very competitive players, and neither team likes to lose.
Both pitchers did well against line-ups that can really hit. Carlos Espada pitched a complete game for the win, scattering 8 hits and three walks, while striking out 4. Doug Reisinger scattered 11 hits, 3 walks, and one hit batter, while striking out 2.
Espada also led the Cubs offense with 3 hits on the night. Ron Lochner added 2 hits for the Cubs, with Mike Reutter, PJ Martone, Paul Miles, Jim McQuade, Mark Meyers, and John Coulombe getting one hit each. Paul Scuteri and Joe Burns had two hits each for the Whiz, with Bob Holmes. Bob Bolt, Doug Reisinger, and Gene Hallenbeck getting one hit each.
Next up for the Cubs is game one of the semi-finals vs the winner of the Twins vs Dodgers game tonight at Watervliet High School. The semi-final will begin with game one on Thursday 09/11, at 5:00 pm at Watervliet High School. Game 2 is next Monday night, 09/15, at the A-Diamond at 5:00 pm. If there is a game 3 necessary, it will take place on Tuesday 09/16, at the A-Diamond, at 7:45 pm.
