Both teams entered the game with high hopes. Both teams had multiple players on the field who were less than 100 percent physically. Its pretty much always about the legs. Gary Webber was the starting pitcher for the Twins. John Weber was the starting pitcher for the Dodgers. Gary Webber retired the Dodgers in the top of the first, facing four batters. John Weber, who is usually a master of control and frustration for opposing batters just could not find the strike zone and walked the first four Twins hitters. 1-0 Twins. Dodgers GM, Don Ball, made the decision to bring in reliever Dennis Lane. The first pitch to Gary Webber by Lane was a perfect fastball strike audibly electrifying the Dodger defenders. Webber eventually singled and the Twins were up 2-0. Lane strikes out the next hitter for the first out. Bases still loaded. Stefan Koutsakis strides to the plate and launches a double to left center clearing the bases . 5-0 Ballgame. Next batter strikes out. Joe Hauser then hits a fly to center that the centerfielder had trouble with and KOUTSAKIS scores on the error. Final out of inning was a one three comebacker and ended with the Twins up 6-0. The Dodgers get one back in the top of the second as MAGUIRE scores with the help of a couple singles. 6-1 game. The Twins get one more in the bottom of the second on a RYCHCIK single who came around to score on a Rick Saidenberg double. 7-1. Nothing for the Dodgers in the top of the third. The bottom of the inning saw the Twins add five more runs on three hits, including another double by KOUTSAKIS,an error, and a hit batter. The Dodgers tacked on one more in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough and the ballgame was called early with the Twins taking a 12-2 victory to move on to the semifinals which will be against the Cubbies starting on Thursday, September 11, 5 PM start, Watervliet high school field. Gougler and Ball were the leading hitters for the Dodgers with two hits each while Dennis Lane contributed a double. Leading the way for the Twins were KOUTSAKIS and WEBBER with two hits each. The play of the game was made by Twins center fielder JEFF WHITEHEAD who made a diving catch of a sinking line drive off the bat of Pat Alston to end the inning in the top of the first saving a run. Baseball is an interesting game to put it mildly. It will leave you scratching your head for so many reasons. The first time the Twins and Dodgers met this season the Twins mercied the Dodgers 12-2. The next time they met, the Dodgers mercied the Twins 10-0. The third and final time, last night, the Twins once again won via the mercy rule, 12-2. It is said that its a thinking mans game. Oh yeah, Ive got this game all figured out. But not !
