The task on Friday for the Cubs was to win both games and make it to championship Saturday where they would need to win another doubleheader to win it all.
The day started at 1:45 pm, at the Twins Spring Training stadium, with the Cubs facing the South Dakota Rushmores (4-seed). Darrell Duncan got the start and he was dealing, giving up just one run through the first 5 innings. The Cubs' offense supported him by scoring a single run in the top of the 3rd; 5 runs in the 5th; and 5 runs in the 5th. With a 10 run lead through 5 innings, now the goal end the game by being 10-runs ahead through 7 innings (mercy rule) . This way we could save resources for the games to come.
Doug Hall came on in the bottom of the 6th, in relief of Duncan. he gave up one run in the inning, so the Cubs would need to score at least one more to qualify for the mercy rule. They did 2 better than that. They scored 3 runs to push the score to 14-2. Paul Graziano, PJ Martone, Gene Hallenbeck, and Dave Mitchell all doubled in the inning.
With a 12 run cushion, The Cubs aim was now to get out of the inning giving up 2 runs or less. With one out, the Rushmores got 3 consecutive singles and a double to score two runs. With the bases loaded and one out, Doug Hall induced a grounder back to the mound and turned it into a 1-2-3 double play. Cubs Win 14-4!
Just what the doctor ordered! Dave Mitchell led the Cubs offense with 3 doubles. PJ Martone, Mike Girard, Jerry Rosen, and Jerry Rosen all had 2 hits each.
Next up was a night game in the same stadium against the # 2 seed Minnesota Bees.
