2-1 Reds host 3-2 Yankees in a 1 run affair

The Yankees Weber faced off against Burns of the Reds last Friday night at Kuhn field. Both teams had large squads and were batting 12 & 13 respectively.

Post led off the first with a single, but Burns was able to get the next 3 batters to keep the Yanks off the board. In the bottom of the first, Miles singled and promptly stole 2nd. Doug hall singled to plate Miles for the only run of the inning.

Burns began to get in a groove and with 2 K's, a BB, and a pop up to himself made quick work of the Yanks. The Reds got a single from the leadoff batter who advanced on an errant throw, but the runner was promptly picked off second by Weber. Burns then singled, stole 2nd, advanced to third on a ground out. But was stranded at third to end the inning.

Burns continued to pitch well, and the Yankees went down quietly in third, leaving the mound surrendering just 1 hit 1 walk and 3 Ks in three innings of work. In the bottom half of the inning the Reds got the leadoff runner on a throwing error. The runner took off for second but was promptly thrown out by PJ Martone. Durbak singled, a fielder's choice, and a single put runners on the corner with two outs. Jaz hit a hard ground ball down the line that looked like trouble. But Pauly Post showed flares of Nettles and dove to knock the ball down and quickly recover for the unassisted force at third to keep the score 1-0 Reds

The fourth inning started a walk to Martone and the hard playing Post at the plate, who got a hold of a line drive over the deep positioned left fielder to the fence for a triple knotting up the score at 1 apiece. Joe Careccia followed with a sac fly to center to give the Yankees their first lead of the game. Knipper bore down and ended the scoring opportunities. The Reds came up in the fourth determined to answer back with the top of the order coming up. Paul Miles doubled to start the inning. With one out Hall singled to plate Miles and knot the score at 2 apiece. A fielder's choice and there were 2 outs with a runner on first. The next two batters walked to load the bases bringing Griffin to the plate. Griffin walked to push the score to 3-2. The veteran Caputo came to the plate after a little layoff and continued with the hot bat plating 2 on a hard single pushing the score to 5-2 before the Yankees defense ended the inning.

McQuade led off the fifth with a single. Then he stole second and moved to third on a passed. After a flyout Maz worked a walk. Nardacci then followed with a Sac fly to right to score Mac and tighten the score. A single by Cerone was followed with a fly out to left leaving two runners on and the score now 5-3. Durbak singled to start the Reds half of the inning. The next butter popped up to third. With one out a bunt moved the runner, but Weber hustled to the ball and made a throw that got the runner on a close play to first. Jaz singled putting runners on the corners and promptly stole second putting runners on second & third with two outs. The next batter hit a line drive to left but the ever-dependable Mac made the catch stranding two and keeping the Reds off the board leaving the score 5-3 Reds.

In the top of the sixth with one out Martone took one for the team to get a runner on. That was followed by a ground out. With two outs Careccia worked a walk and then Rosen singled to load the bases. Ron Smaka came up with 2 outs and the bases loaded. He hit a single with runners moving and two runs that scored two pulling the Yankees even. The Reds made a pitching change with two outs and two runners on. Mac came up and delivered a single to center that was relayed to short and fired to third for the third out. But, not before the Rosen crossed the plate to put the Yankees on top again at 6-5. In the bottom of the sixth with one out the Reds were determined to answer back. Hall reached on an error that was followed up with a double by Mitchell to put runners on 2nd & third. Kenny Shaw then followed with a sack fly to knot things up again at six apiece. A couple of walks would load the bases and force a pitching change. Facing Maz with 2 outs and bases loaded would lead to a ground out ending the threat by the Reds and a tied score after six.

Carpenter would lead off the seventh with a single and stolen base. A single by Nardacci would put two on. Hall would get a big K for the second out.
A passed ball at Kuhn with a lot of ground for the catcher to cover resulted in Carps just beating the throw to the pitcher and a securing a coveted one run lead. Cortese followed with a single to put runners on the corners, but a ground ball ended the Yankees half of the inning with them taking a 7-6 lead. In the bottom half of the inning the Reds went down quietly securing the win for the Yankees.
