38+ A's - Week of July 31

I have been told that ties are like kissing your sister. Well, the A's must have two sisters - one who looks like their Mom, Angelina Jolie (We'll call her "Sexy") and the other one who looks like their Dad, Ernest Borgnine (We'll call her "Butt-Ugly"). We kissed each of them last week.

Monday A's 9 - Giants - 9
In the game against the Giants, we kissed Sexy.

The A's struck first with a run in the top of the 2nd. On base with a single, Ed Class scored on a groundout by Tony Borey.

From the bottom of the 2nd through the bottom of the 4th, the Giants strung together innings of 4, 2 and 3 runs to make the score 9-1. During these innings they had a total of 10 hits, including 3 doubles. Phillips had a double and a single in the Giants onslaught.

The A's worked on their pucker for Angelina with 2 runs in the sixth driven in by Ed Class to make the score 9-3. In the 7th, the gates opened up for the A's. Having scored 4 times to make the score 9-7 with two outs, Ed Class came up with runners on second and third to face Matt Cater. With two strikes, Big Sloppy hit a solid ground-ball single up the middle to plate the two runs.

Tony Borey had worked the last three innings in his first pitching performance of the year to get the "Tie". He also had 2 doubles.

Ed was first in line for Sexy, Toney got sloppy seconds and the rest of us were still happy with what we got.

Friday - A's 10 - Fordians 10
For the game against the Fordians, it looked like Sexy might be at the game again for the A's, but it was Butt-Ugly instead.

Again, the A's struck first with a run in the 1st. But some baserunning blunders kept it from being a bigger inning. The Fordians then came back with 3 of their own in the first (without benefit of a hit), then 2 more in the second on a two RBI single by Rick Caruso to take a 5-1 lead.

That score held until the 4th when the A's got one back, but the Fordians got two more to make it 7-2.

In the top of the fifth, the A's had their bid for Sexy when they scored 7 runs, the big hit being a Newcomb double for 2 of the runs. The score had become 9-7 and held until the seventh.

Newcomb hit a sac fly to plate David Schillinger with the last of his four runs scored to make it 10-7. In the the bottom of the inning, the Fordians were down to their last out after two dribblers to the Jim Maloney on the mound. An error by the A's put a runner on (Heretofore known as "the Turning Point") . Dolan then hit a run scoring single off of pitcher Maloney's foot, followed by another single through Jim's wickets by the #5 hitter (can't read the name in the book). With the tying runs on, Noto hits (Sorry, CRUSHES) an opposite field screamer for a triple to score the tying runs. The Fordians had held tough. The last out was finally recorded to leave it at a tie.

The A's sent Sexy away and called on Butt-Ugly to get in line instead and smooch each one with her pug-nosed, moustached-bearing visage. (Just to let you know, David was first in line there).

The Fordians were led by Noto's triple and single and the #5 hitter's double and single. For the A's, Newcomb had a double and 3 RBI, David Schillinger had a single, three walks and 4 runs and George Schillinger had two singles and an RBI.

Moral of the story - there ain't none.
Ok - maybe this is it - don't bring your sisters to the game.
