i stopped to see bob lawyer on monday, new year's day, at his home, and the good news is that he is home, standing and walking and looking very much like himself - strong and vital and cracking jokes. it was a fine sight, especially given that he's spent four of his christmas holidays undergoing quadruple by-pass surgery at st. peter's.
bob, who isn't quite up to typing just yet, wanted me to thank you all for your notes and your calls.
bob has an exercise regimen - starting with a 20-minute walk on new years day, and increasing it gradually everyday. he's also on a new diet- part of which (joyous news) includes a glass of red french wine daily (french reds have a quality that breaks up plaque in arteries, which explains in part why the french can eat tons cheese and meats and still live to be 99; well, that and beautiful french women), and no smoking. ("i've gone cold-turkey," he said about the smoking. "and i feel fine, no cravings.") he hopes to go back to work in about a month. he's being helped in all this by hi wife patricia and two daughters and two sons.
bob does have about a 14-inch scar that runs from above his belly to just below his neck. once that - and the sternum below it that the doctors sawed open to get in - heal in about three months, bob expects to increase his exercise regimen - with an eye to playing ball again for the over-48 vets this summer. he even plans to get behind the dish again.
"that's what i am," he said, "a catcher."
modern medicine and the doctors who practice it (in this case a tip of the cap to dr. bennett) are amazing. i'm sure it helps to have amazing patients, too.
"so, be sure to tell the guys i said thanks; i really mean that. the guys were great," the patient said.
Hey girls, good to be back, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during my little vacation. Thanks for the calls from everyone and visits while at St. Peters. Feel pretty good and looking forward to a new year on the field. Will finally be nice to have a little energy. Again, Thanks for all the concern shown out there during the little episode and look forward to seeing you all in the spring. Guys, live life to it's fullest and enjoy everyday as it comes. See y'all later, Bob
There was someone at the winter meeting that offered to train interested managers in CPR/First Aid. If you remember who that is, and maybe you are following up with this, I'd be interested in a refresher course...its been quite a while since my certification lapsed. Also, if you email/call me about my offer to help with the defib efforts. Thanks. PaulS0908@msn.com
